Raphael Warnock

Raphael Warnock's rise from a Savannah housing project to the United States Senate is one of the most remarkable stories in modern America. Born in 1969, the eleventh of twelve children, Warnock grew up in Kayton Homes public housing in Savannah, Georgia. His father salvaged old cars, and his mother picked cotton as a child in the Jim Crow South. He graduated from Morehouse College — Martin Luther King Jr.'s alma mater — and earned his PhD in systematic theology from Union Theological Seminary. In 2005, at age 35, Warnock became senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta — MLK's spiritual home and one of the most historically significant Black churches in America. For 15 years he used the pulpit to advocate for Medicaid expansion, voter registration, and criminal justice reform. Warnock's political evolution is compressed — pastor-activist to senator in a single leap. His 2020 special election capitalized on Georgia's demographic transformation and Trump's alienation of suburban voters. His 2022 runoff against Herschel Walker became the most expensive Senate race in history, with Warnock raising an astonishing $175 million — largely from small-dollar Democratic donors nationwide.
