Maxine Waters

Maxine Waters is one of the most powerful and polarizing figures in American politics — a 17-term congresswoman who has used her position atop the Financial Services Committee to terrify and frustrate Wall Street. Born in 1938 in St. Louis, Missouri, the fifth of thirteen children, Waters grew up in poverty and began working in factories as a teenager. She moved to Los Angeles in 1961, became a Head Start volunteer, and earned her bachelor's at Cal State LA at age 32 while working and raising two children.
