Thiel also holds what ProPublica revealed as a $5 billion Roth IRA — built by placing PayPal shares in the tax-sheltered account before they appreciated, then watching them grow tax-free for decades. It is one of the largest known tax shelters in history, and the IRS rules that allow it are defended by the very politicians Thiel funds. The contradiction: Thiel, a self-described libertarian who rails against government power, has built his fortune on government contracts and his political power through government appointments.
